[Re] discover your own voice in movement, authenticity and creativity in contemporary dance classes at CNDB!

From March to June 2025, dance classes for adults (beginners and intermediates) divided into two modules taught by artists Andreea Novac and Alexandra Mihaela Dancs will resume.

By mastering some basic theoretical notions, specific contemporary dance movement practices and techniques, as well as through guided improvisation, you will discover more about your relationship with your body in movement, how you relate to space, music and those around you, and what makes you live more in the present.

Overview | what you’ll learn in our dance classes:

  • notions about the body, motricity, the relationship with space, rhythm and energy that you put into each individual and group movement and action;
  • movement exercises found in contemporary dance techniques;
  • ways to express yourself freely, to formulate your own ‘voice’ in movement, through choreographic exercises that use improvisation as a structured method of knowing and learning;
  • improving memory, mobility and muscle tone;
  • Analytical skills to “read” and relate more easily to a choreographic construction (moment or performance involving movement).

Additional benefits:

  • for the entire duration of the course, participants will benefit from a 50% discount on CNDB performances of the current season;
  • 50% discount for the event “Dance. Context. Showcase” from April 24 to April 27, at more than 10 contemporary dance performances taking place at both the CNDB and Linotip – Independent Choreographic Center (subject to seating availability);
  • guided access to the CNDB media library resources (books, documents, periodicals and videos of international dance and performance performances, etc.);
  • access to various sources of information on contemporary dance, curated by the course teachers.

Classes description

Module 1 | 5.03 – 30.04.2025 | every Wednesday from 19:00 to 21:00

The workshop is held by choreographer and dancer Andreea Novac and includes 8 meetings, through which you will discover your own way of being in movement using guided improvisations, choreographic structures and practices. You will train your sensitivity and kinesthetic intelligence and gain a better understanding of your own body. You will discover the body in movement, a complex space to be explored, a container of rich and diverse kinetic, affective, cognitive and social experiences. You will learn how to move more efficiently, expressively, creatively, cultivating new perspectives to approach, look at, understand, practice movement.

Module 2 | 20.05 – 24.06.2025 | every Tuesday from 19:00 to 21:00

The second module is coordinated by Alexandra Mihaela Dancs, and in it you will discover how to (re)connect with your own body and overcome the false limits imposed on your relationship with dance. You will acquire theoretical notions and basic movement techniques specific to contemporary dance, through exercises, guided improvisations and short accessible choreographic sequences to discover a personal physicality based on your own experience and individuality, with an emphasis on authenticity rather than on approaching a particular movement vocabulary or aesthetic. You will improve your posture, flexibility, physical endurance, coordination, balance and energy levels.

She received the prize for best choreography at the UNATC gala (master) in 2017 and the Prize for the contribution to contemporary dance awarded by the National Center for Dance Bucharest in 2020.

The workshop I propose is built around the idea of the body in movement as a complex space to be explored, a container of rich and diverse kinetic, affective, cognitive and social experiences. We will use guided improvisations, choreographic structures and practices to discover our own way of being in movement, but also how dance can bring us together and connect us. We will train our sensitivity and kinesthetic intelligence and discover multiple answers to the question “what moves us”. I would like our meetings to bring a better knowledge of our own body, to facilitate contexts for efficient, expressive, creative movement, to encourage new perspectives to approach, look at, understand, practice movement.
– Andreea Novac

She conceived “All for Endorphins”, a program produced by CNDB for all dance enthusiasts, running from 2016 to 2023. In 2014 she received the Award of Excellence from CNDB for her contribution to the construction of contemporary dance, and in 2024, the Special Jury Award for bodily expressivity at the Bucharest Fringe Festival. For several years, Alexandra has dedicated herself with the same passion she has for dance, to surfing.

We lose the connection with our own bodies, we set false boundaries for all sorts of reasons and we feel that dancing is not for us. In fact, dance is for everyone. It’s a tool for learning, self-awareness and relating to the world around us, within everyone’s reach. In this workshop we will acquire theoretical notions and basic movement techniques specific to contemporary dance, through exercises, guided improvisations and short choreographic sequences accessible to all to discover a personal physicality based on each one’s experience and individuality, with an emphasis on authenticity rather than on approaching a particular movement vocabulary or aesthetic. Over time we will see not only improvements in posture, flexibility, physical endurance, coordination, balance and energy levels, but also a transformation in the way we interact with the reality in which we live.
