  • Free entry by reservation

11:00 – 14:00

Info

The National Centre for Dance Bucharest (CNDB), in partnership with the ‘I.L. Caragiale’ University of Theatre and Cinema Arts (UNATC), is organising the Politics of Intimacy masterclass, held by choreographer and director Christine Gaigg.

Christine Gaigg’s recent performance work addresses topics of intimacy and sexuality, starting from the performance essay “Maybe the way you made love twenty years ago is the answer?” up to the latest project “polymono” which premiered 2024 at ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival. On the grounds of social political developments of non-monogamous relationships “polymono” serves as a performative experiment that involves the audience in participartory ways. “polymono”
asks for openness and curiosity of all participants, the performers as well as the audience.
As an event of exchanging, discussing and sharing of practices, the Masterclass will give some insight into the conception and rehearsal process of “polymono” as well as into the development of the interactive performance format itself. Instead of set material there are principles and choreographic strategies for navigating in safe space – and also in brave space.

Registration
The event is dedicated to performing artists and participation is free of charge, but pre-registration is required by filling in this form.

Biography

Christine Gaigg studied philosophy (Dr.phil) in Vienna, as well as dance and choreography at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) in Amsterdam. She works as a choreographer, director and author based in Vienna.
Her work can be divided into three phases: structural choreography in collaboration with composers of New Music; performance essays in the field of documentary theater; interactive encounter formats.
She opened the ImPulsTanz Festival 2001 with “Sacre Material” with the composer Max Nagl, and with the composer Bernhard Lang, with whom she explored a loop grammar between sound and movement in the TRIKE-series
(2004-2012) she opened the festival steirischer herbst 2010 with “Maschinenhalle#1”.
Her performance essays deal with the Pussy Riot action in “DeSacre!”
(2013), the production of images of war in “untitled (look, look, come closer)” (2015), or the Orlando attack “CLASH” (2016). A series is dedicated to socio-political questions about sexuality: “Maybe the way you made love twenty years is the answer?” (2014) and “Affair” (2019) about the chemistry of desire and the change of discourse, and “Go for it let go” (2021) about female ejaculation.
The development of performative interactive formats began with “Meet”
(2018), continued with the transposition of the film “Rote Sonne” into the theater and audience space and is dedicated to non-monogamous forms of relationships in “polymono” (2024). Her performances are usually premiered at Tanzquartier Wien or ImPulsTanz Festival.
As a director, she staged “Über Tiere” (2007) by Elfriede Jelinek at Theater Neumarkt Zürich, “Wenn die Kinder Steine ins Wasser werfen”
(2012) by Xaver Bayer at Schauspielhaus Wien and “Rote Sonne” (2022) by Rudolf Thome at Volkstheater Wien.
In addition to her artistic activities, she also teaches at the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna, gives lectures and publishes.

The event is organised with the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum.
