Info
American Gypsy is a performative exploration of the migration theme in Romania, inspired by the autobiographical novel with the same name by the Roma author Oksana Marafioti – Author, and by the oficial data which states that in 2017, Romanians where the largest european community to be expelled from the United States. The show brings into light the story of Romanians who left for the USA, seen through the eyes of a Roma teenager, who is fascinated by the cultural differences, especially those related to music, while at the same time following her attempts to adapt to this new context.
American Gypsy combines elements from theater, performance, contemporary dance, biomechanics and cultural research and reimagines a series of movements inspired by pop culture, all together succeeding to highlight the status of being a migrant in a completely new culture.
EXTRA
American Gypsy is the follow-up of a larger directorial project, regarding performative research of Roma teenagers, of the director Mihai Lukács. The first show from the series, Who Killed Szomna Grancsa?, produced in 2017 by the Giuvlipen Theater Company, tells the story of a young Roma who commits suicide in the village Frumoasa, Hargita county. The project builds narratives about teenagers forgotten by society, who, although right next to us, grow up and live unseen, sometimes leading to drama, emotional difficulties and even tragedies.
