Info

“Kill the Fucking Bill(s)” is the first theatrical-performatic experience of the research project “HYBRIDyo. Cuentas, restituciones y resiliencia”/ “HYBRIDme. Bills, restitutions and resilience”– within the framework of HÍBRIDOS laberintorio rizomático, an interdisciplinary platform founded by Adriana Butoi in 2014 in Mexico City- and traces in different formats her explorations on the performativity of the gesture of “making peace ethically with what is” – with a look upon the history of humanity- between its joys and miseries- and its effects on micropolitics. The experience activates the archives of the research project by establishing a parallel narrative line with Quentin Tarantino’s film “Kill Bill” in order to experience a symbolic revenge against the systems that caused the failure of personal and collective utopias throughout history.

A conference space is transformed into a battle field, a theatre and a desert, to subject the academic discourse to representational games that allow it to develop its wildest and most combative side personified through the body of an actress-performer who makes personal the politics that distribute power and justice in the world. In this game of appropriation, artistic expressions are fundamental to generate resistance to the exploitative systems. This autofiction aims to have the performative potency of a personal manifesto about rhizomatic thinking and the hybridentity of an inter.multi.pluri.transcultural self in full deconstruction, establishing various relations of meaning with the film “Kill Bill” and opposing the personal archive laden with frustrations, wounds and resentments to macropolitical and micropolitical acts that destroy life- in order to create a narrative of necessary revenge against the historical reality- a product of capital, and thus achieve a state of satisfaction and harmony.

Biographies

Adriana Butoi is an interdisciplinary artist of Romanian origin, living and working mainly in Mexico since 2011. She has a BA and MA in the Actor’s Art and a PhD in Theatre (magna cum laude, 2017, UNATC I. L. Caragiale, Romania- Mexico scholarship, in honorary cotutelle with UADY and UNAM, Mexico) and also completed a specialization in the Conservatoire National Supérieur d’Art Dramatique in Paris (France scholarship, 2003- 2004). Her hybrid actorialities are based on psychological realism – “the character is I and I is another” – and at the same time on interdisciplinarity: dance, pantomime, writing, performance art, video art, archive, languages and humanities. She has a 25-year professional trajectory in which she has collaborated with scenic and interdisciplinary creators, film and television directors from 12 countries. A theorist and practitioner of performatic theatre, Butoi focuses on the historical gestures of conceptual re-cycling and up-cycling of theatricalities and performativities generating hybridities that translate ontological codes of diversity into the interstice of our present. Recognized as an agent of thirdness and an artivist, with a constant philosophical and anthropological participatory field research and a remarkable theatrical practice (performative and pedagogical) based on rituals of transgression, liminalities and micropolitics, she signs her becoming as a mediator between social groups and cultures, historical moments and the production of the presence of challenging immateriality. Founder and coordinator of HÍBRIDOS laberintorio rizomático/ HYBRIDS rhizomatic labyrinthory– an itinerant interdisciplinary platform of confluence of differences- since 2014, she has developed projects in the field of the ‘expanded scenario’, focused on research and performative practice, with several artistic residencies in Mexico, the United States of America, Romania, Peru, Chile and Colombia.

Adriana’s main collaborator in the creation of the current version of the show is Anacarsis Ramos, a Mexican performative artist. Playwright, stage director, researcher and teacher. He has presented his plays in several national festivals. His plays include Infierno comprendido/ Hell Understood, Zombis Comunistas/ Communist Zombis and Jodidxs/ Fucked up, in which he investigates the relationship between social reality and its representation in the media. He is interested in the different uses of fiction in state, commercial and community contexts, the ideological framework behind the grand narratives that structure us, and the empowering quality of generating discourses and narratives about oneself and the groups to which one belongs. He is co-artistic director of Pornotráfico and writes about theatre at mataclase.blogspot.com.

The project “Kill the Fucking Bill(s)” was originally developed by Adriana Butoi in the Diplomado de prácticas performativas program organized by Circuito Liquen (Bogota, Colombia, September-November 2022) and participated in the Teatro Para El Fin Del Mundo/ Theatre for the End of the World Festival (Tampico, Mexico, December 2022), premiering in its current version (with the accompaniment of the collaborators in the presentation) in June 2023 in Foro del Dinosaurio at Museo Universitario del Chopo- a contemporary art museum of UNAM (National Autonomous University of Mexico) in Mexico City, and also having a mini-season in Teatro El Galeón Abraham Oceransky of the Centro Cultural del Bosque, Mexico City, in August 2023.
