Info
This summer, the National Center for Dance Bucharest (CNDB) becomes a meeting place where differences such as age, social status, training, knowledge and experience are being suspended, and dance is the binder that aims at bringing very different types of people together. CNDB is launching “Courtyard Dances”, a project in which the yard of CNDB’s location on Mărășești Blvd. will be arranged to host over 40 artists who will propose events that range from contemporary dance and performance to live music, visual arts and poetry.
In the winter of 2020, Cristina Lilienfeld and Alina Ușurelu spent a month at Perfocraze International Artist Residency in Kumasi, Ghana. This center is supported by a group of Ghanaian artists who, in a few years, have managed to create a self-sustaining ecosystem that hosts dozens of artists each year.
The meeting with the art and culture from Ghana shook a series of concepts and visions that Cristina and Alina shared, and in this intense process of knowledge a show entitled “See You Soon” was born. Beyond the theme with which the two artists began the work process, this show crystallizes the transformative experience in which they participated and the meeting place between the two cultures.
The piece began by exploring the rites of passage dedicated to the souls of those who died. In this process, the duo composed of a choreographer and a visual artist/performer created a new ritual that incorporates elements from both cultures and creates a new way of relating tothe ritual. Thus, researching the symbols belonging to both cultures (Ghanaian and Romanian), they came to explore different relationships: earth and myths, water and the human voice, vegetation and rebirth.
The research had a strong personal component, and the description that the guests were able to read contained the following phrase:
“We offer our bodies to perform this new ritual, hoping to create a connection with all those who participate. Our intention is towards the earth; we whisper, we shout, everything we would like to say to our dead, but the messages remain isolated in us and for us.”
