In November, CNDB is presenting online 9 video productions that accompany each of the performances that resulted from Dance me to the End of… (exercises, distances, proximities) – a program whereby ten guest choreographers worked along with the first generation of students from The CNDB Academy of Dance and Performance.
Jan Burkhardt (DE) and Sigal Zouk (ISR), Mădălina Dan, Simona Deaconescu, Farid Fairuz, Eduard Gabia, Andreea Novac, Manuel Pelmuș, Willy Prager (BG) and Vava Ștefănescu – were invited by CNDB to revisit well-known works of theirs which, in their time, wrote history in Romanian contemporary dance.
The choreographers worked together with the students from The CNDB Academy of Dance and Performance to bring back to stage the older works, but also to propose new ones. After a year of courses and workshops, the formed teams went through an intensive process of practice and live presentation.
The whole process was documented by Bogdana Pascal, video artist and TVR producer. Throughout November, CNDB will broadcast these video productions via live streaming on Facebook.
The nine video productions capture Dance me to the End of… (exercises, distances, proximities) in its essence: the revisitation of recent Romanian contemporary dance history as an exercise in training the new generation of dancers and performers.
Through interviews with artists, rehearsals recordings and excerpts from the original nine shows, the documentaries presented by CNDB invite you to discover the collective and personal efforts behind Dance me to the End of… (exercises, distances, closeness) – the program through which a new generation of artists is making their debut right in the middle of a pandemic.
OUTCOME – by Manuel Pelmuș
Outcome premiered at the 2001 edition of the “BucurEȘTi Vest” International Dance Festival, organized by the DCM Project Foundation and was seen as a kind of short circuit, a shock, which for many of the young choreographers of the time produced an interruption of the aesthetics derived from French dance, which had left a strong mark on Romanian choreography in the early 1990s. The work has been spotted internationally and presented at several festivals in Europe.
Outcome came as an echo of the artist’s proximity to the new European dance of that time. In addition to participating in international workshops and festivals, Manuel Pelmuș wanted to understand what transformations were taking place in the choreographic discourse of that time.
During the process of creating the original piece, Manuel Pelmuș worked alongside artist Eduard Gabia, the performer who is by his side today, handing over the baton to the young dancer Filip Stoica, the star of the new version of the work.
This is the first work in which Pelmuș questions what choreography means to him, the position of the body in society, its artistic and political implications. The artist refers to Outcome as a work that has influenced everything he has produced artistically, even if in other forms or spaces of presentation.
I see it as an attempt to overcome certain limits about what I learned and understood about dance up to that point, as an answer to the international trends of the “new European dance” present in that period. Locally, I think there is an openness towards new forms of artistic expression and thought, like the new Romanian wave in cinematography, but also in visual arts or in the semi-institutional realm, through the a emergence of new, independent art constructs, a desire to invent and build new spaces for artistic research, like the National Dance Center Bucharest, and for another kind of political and civic consciousness, in the forming and affirmation process during the beginning of the new century in Romania.
