Self ACME. rebalancing and personal optimization resort is a dance performance about the search for the best self in a semi-fictional world where “pop philosophy” and personal development products have effectively contributed to the standardization of the ideal of success. An algorithm calculates each person’s progress against a set of parameters, and stagnation or regression will send you to a resort designed to train you according to the principles of competitive individualism.
Three performers, stuck in the resort until the algorithm confirms their personal rating increases, revisit the times, relationships and contexts that shaped them, and their stories ironically and humorously challenge the assumption that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Life as a perpetual struggle in which all of a person’s experiences, hopes and ideals are seen as quantifiable achievements that categorize them as winners or losers is contrasted with the possibility of another space, of closeness, empathy and diversity, in which we turn our attention to changing the rules, not just ourselves.
