Choreographers and dancers from Greece, Poland, Hungary and Romania invite you to a unique discussion about dance not as a performance, but as a way of perceiving and understanding reality. Join the conversation with Mihai Mihalcea [Romania].
Unauthorized movements: from Taylorism to dance and digital surveillance, a performative conference
Building on the Taylorist vision and principles, movement today is often captured, mapped, codified and constrained – by borders, by institutions, by surveillance, by the very architecture of cities and urbanism, by the design of furniture objects, and ultimately conditioned by the very biomechanics implicit in our bodies. For all the efforts of technology and artificial intelligence to extract/capture and recognize the movement of the human body, at its core, it possesses characteristics that resist capture. All these serious ideas and issues have led me to a very playful format in which I address the liberating potential of movement, which I performatively play with.
Mihai Mihalcea is a performer and choreographer. Through his work he has contributed to the international recognition of Romanian contemporary dance and, at the same time, he has had a major contribution to the establishment and activity of structures and institutions that have become landmarks of this art: the Marginalii Group, the Multi Art Dance Center, the IndepenDans Festival, subRahova, the Cultural Home (initiated together with Manuel Pelmuș and Brynjar Bandlien). He is co-founder of the National Dance Center Bucharest (CNDB), of which he was director from 2005-2013, and is currently Director of Programs and Projects.
The debate is part of the DanceTalk series, an event dedicated to both the general and professional public. The event is organized by CNDB and carried out in the framework of the Moving Balkans project, a dynamic contemporary dance platform that collaborates with numerous dance institutions from countries in the region.
