Twenty years after the establishment of the National Dance Center Bucharest (CNDB), Iridescent – International Festival of Contemporary Dance and other reconfigurations of the sensitive opens with the presentation of one of the most urgent and ambitious projects, the transformation of the Omnia Hall into the appropriate and permanent home of one of the most dynamic and effervescent cultural institutions in the Romanian cultural landscape.
More details about the festival program HERE.
On July 31, 2024, the Ministry of Culture, through the Project Management Unit, announced the start of the public tender procedure for the award of the contract for the execution of the works of consolidation, remodeling and modernization of the Omnia Hall, intended for the Bucharest National Dance Center. At this stage, we would like to share with the public the plans resulting from the design process, technical and economic details, as well as the institution’s vision for the future.
The scale and significance of the project are particularly significant in terms of its social and urban planning aspects, which involve returning to the public circuit one of the buildings of particular historical significance. At the same time, this project responds to a long-awaited expectation of the public, but also of several generations of artists, choreographers, dancers, theorists and teachers, who have made efforts over the last 13 years to develop a consistent and relevant activity, internationally recognized, but still lacking an adequate infrastructure.
We recall that after the eviction, in the spring of 2011, from the building of the Bucharest National Theatre, in which the Bucharest National Dance Center (CNDB) was managing spaces of over 3000 m², CNDB remained the only public performing arts institution without a suitable premises. For all the others that left the TNB building, solutions were found and investments were made, including the construction of a new building, as in the case of the Ion Dacian Operetta Theater. Since 2013, the CNDB has been renting a space that does not meet the institution’s needs, being much undersized, with no storage space, no offices and no dance studios to meet the growing demands coming from dance professionals.
Only in 2016, by Government Decision 651/2016, in force since 19.09.2016, the Bucharest National Dance Center was allocated the Omnia Hall.
This is part of the provisions of the Framework Loan Agreement between Romania and the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB), initialed on May 4, 2007, with subsequent amendments and additions, aimed at financing Project F/P 1572 (2006) on the completion of construction, renovation or rehabilitation of cultural buildings of public interest in Romania, approved by GD no. 933 of August 7, 2007. The building included in the Agreement is intended for the functioning of the Bucharest National Dance Center (CNDB), subordinated to
Ministry of Culture, and through the effect of the Loan Framework Agreement, the entire necessary amount – 13.4 million Euro – is allocated to it, both for the design services and for the execution of the remodeling, consolidation and reconstruction works.
In the context of the launch of Iridescent – Festival of contemporary dance and other reconfigurations of the sensitive and the public presentation of the Omnia Hall’s plans, we invite you to attend the press conference organized on Thursday, October 31, at 11:00, inside the Omnia Hall, 3 Cristian Popișteanu Street, Bucharest.
