Academy of Dance and Performance Laboratories are opening their doors for an open house event marking the conclusion of a two-week intensive workshop led by choreographer and artist Sergiu Matis.
The students explored the movement practice The Visible Thinking Body (VTB), developed by the artist beginning in 2013, a methodology that investigates the relationship between cognitive processes and bodily action, as well as the way in which thought—from memory and decision-making to impulse and imagination—is transformed into dance. Participants worked with choreographic tools that treat the body as a living archive of movement experiences and as a space for imaginary navigation, generating new ways of creating and interpreting dance.
The open doors event offers the public the chance to discover the results of this artistic and research process through work presentations, demonstrations, and direct encounters with the participating artists. It is an opportunity to go behind the scenes of a contemporary choreography workshop and observe how ideas, images, and thought become movement on stage. We invite you to this moment of sharing and dialogue on Tuesday, March 31, to explore together the processes, questions, and directions opened up by this collective working experience.
Biography
Sergiu Matis is a Romanian choreographer who has been living and working in Berlin since 2008. His works have been presented throughout Europe, and he has led workshops and educational activities at various institutions around the world.
His dance practice can be seen as a tireless exploration of physical and digitized archives, aiming to cast a critical lens on what has been archived, to salvage what was thought to be lost, and to reinvent what has not been documented. The accumulation of history serves as an old map, becoming a starting point for revealing a new image of dance. Her performances provoke intense experiences that challenge accepted ideas and embrace the complexities of our times.
This workshop is organized with the support of the Goethe-Institut Bucharest.
