Omnia hall (Cristian Popișteanu, 3)

Info

An architecturally stunning building, the Omnia Hall has a controversial political history. Located in the centre of Bucharest, the building was designed by Romanian architect Cezar Lăzărescu in 1967 as an annex to the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party, where party conferences with Nicolae Ceaușescu were held. Since 1989, it has been used by the Romanian Senate, and then for several years it was used by the National Opera as a rehearsal space. In 2016, the building became the property of the National Centre for Dance Bucharest, and has been waiting to be renovated and rebuilt ever since.

The atmosphere of the hall is intense, moving through the building is almost a performative concept, the stuccowork on the walls and ceilings is lavish, and behind the main halls various machines are hidden. Over time, however, the patina of an abandoned building has created an eerie atmosphere.

Mutual Loop (Holger Lang and Martina Tritthart from Vienna, Austria) chose Sala Omnia to implement a site-specific participatory light and media intervention as part of their s[a]it{life} project for three nights, between 26-28 August. Mutual Loop invited artists from Bucharest such as Iosif and Aurora Kiraly, Ana and Sever Petrovici-Popescu, among others, to participate with recordings (audio, video or photos) of Bucharest, which the Austrian artists then transformed into several video installations. Some of the artists, such as Béla Zoltan, are also partnering with artistic interventions for the event.

Tours will take place daily from Friday 26 August to Sunday 28 August from 20:30 to 21:30. For registration, please come before the tour to the reception at Sala Omnia, 3 Cristian Popișteanu Street.
