Info

MEMETICS* is an archive of digital culture, a performative space of hyperlinks transferred into
body, on which the author intervenes through remixing and re-contextualisation actions.
The generation and spread of information online, analogous to the phenomenon of spreading viruses,
changes the perception of reality and is transferred into the mode of cultural production. Starting from memes**, the performance aims to hybridise bodies, placed between the real and the virtual plane of the avatar. As a technique, MEMETICS proposes juxtapositions of transgressive elements, critical and post-ironic elements that blur the boundary between public and private. The show proposes a fragmented, scrolling vision of reality with pop elements, trends, internet slang and viral images promoted in the Web 2.0 era.

*Memetics = the theoretical and empirical science that studies the reproduction, spread and evolution
memes.
**Memes, memes = small cultural units of transmission, analogous to genes, that spread by from one person to another by copying or imitation (from songs, slogans, fashion, abstract beliefs, such as that in God, to 9GAG).

Biography

Sergiu Diță (1999) is an emerging performer and choreographer working in the independent area. His artistic practice focuses on using pop culture as an element of social critique; thematically he is interested in investigating gender stereotypes. In his own performances – “NEO-KITSCH” (2021), “MANUAL” (2023), “MEMETICS” (2024) – he uses the technique of “manifesto-collage-recitative”, which involves critical exposition of the subject, collage of quotations, socio-cultural clichés and text. His research involves processes of recycling, sampling and remixing. The performance “MANual” won the Grand Prix at the Festival-Competition “D-butan-t” (2023) and was selected for the Mittelyoung 2024 festival.
Sergiu Diță graduated from the Bachelor’s and Master’s program of the National University of Theatrical and Cinematographic Arts “I. L. Caragiale” Bucharest, Choreographic Art section and the Academy of Dance and Performance (CNDB).
Together with Anca Stoica they work as an artistic duo under the name Platforma 13, an independent initiative dedicated to transdisciplinary experimentation. Their performances: “Pop Recycling Body Work” (2022) & “Balkan Ballerinas” (2024) are about a reactive body that attacks prejudices, normative patterns and geographical, political and cultural demarcations.
Choreography and stage movement for theater performances: “Central Center” (directed by Irisz Kovacs), “Individual Composed” (directed by Andrei Măjeri), “The Dream” (directed by Dragoș Alexandru Mușoiu), “My Own” (directed by Raul Coldea), “A Child on a Liter of Gasoline” (directed by Irisz Kovacs).

The performance is the result of the Festival-Competition “D-butan-t”, organized by the “Andrei Mureșanu” Theatre Sfântu Gheorghe and the Constanta State Theatre, with the support of the National Dance Centre Bucharest (CNDB), 7th edition, whose Grand Prize was won by choreographer Sergiu Diță.
