Info

”At exhibi-skin, the visitor was invited to welcome a tactile and sound experience – inspired by a sculpture in the exhibition – on her/his own body. Themes such as form, dynamics, volume, texture, materiality were transferred and translated into the non-visual, tactile and sensory world, and paired with the biological/somatic/imaginative substance of the human body. In this setup, the body is the “stage”, and the emotional texture is the subjective surface. The living cellular structure interacts with the sound and the (referenced) sculpture, with its image, atmosphere, and “story”. exhibi-skin sets out to appropriate the sculptural medium in an experiential approach. This proximity leads to multiple mutations, creating and dissolving spaces and relationships: the contemplative gets lost in the sensorial, the viewer is transformed into a subject/object, the artist-spectator relationship morphs. The addition of the tactile sphere3 to the exhibition framework aspires to a de-ranking of the sense of vision, shifting the attention towards perception and sensory experience. This approach alludes to a precursory stage to aesthetics, to the return to aísthēsis – the sensory experience and perception as a means of gaining knowledge, preceding the visual and the representable.” (Mădălina Dan)

The artwork was conceived and presented for the first time in the “Brâncuși. Sublimation of Form” exhibition at BOZAR, Brussels as part of the Europalia 2019 Arts Festival. For “after SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE after”, new tactile and sound pieces – inspired by the sculptures of artists in the permanent exhibitions housed at the U Barracks: Dan Vezentan, Mircea Cantor, Peter Jecza, Paul Neagu, Andreea Anghel, Alexandra Satmari, Adrian Kiss, Nimbert Ambrus – were designed and performed.
