Description Warp Renderings
In this new solo work, Sergiu Matis explores how aestheticized landscape imagery has distorted contemporary society’s relationship to the natural world – from European landscape painting traditions to photography, satellite imagery, CGI and virtual reality.
“Warp Renderings” proposes different ways of accessing the natural environment by re-examining and investigating the ideological twists to which it has been subjected in the past. These distortions are exaggerated to the breaking point, cracking and warping the canvas and screen, and creating fissures in the body, making it permeable and able to resonate with the natural elements it represents. Perhaps through this breaking of traditions – this conceptual vandalism – we can repair and restore our connection to nature, allowing it to flood us again, or at the very least, to return to the dancing body.

Biography
Sergiu Matis is a Romanian choreographer living and working in Berlin since 2008. His work has been presented all over Europe and he has led workshops and educational activities at various institutions around the world. His dance practice can be seen as a relentless search through embodied and digitized archives in order to place a critical lens on what has been archived, to rescue what was supposedly lost, and to reinvent what has not been documented. The accumulation of history serves as an old map that becomes a starting point towards revealing a new image of dance. Her performances provoke intense experiences that fracture accepted ideas and embrace the complexities of our times.
