Info
How does one translate a place? How do language, place, and body intertwine—and how does the specificity of a rural landscape shape a person’s habitus? The vernacular alters the speaker’s posture, and the flows of capital and its accumulation leave their mark on the land. We carry places with us, and, setting out from these places, we move toward one another, inevitably always in translation; places shape our bodies, condition our gaze, and are repeated in our gestures and the way we speak. Capital exploits the distinctive characteristics of places, but at the same time erases them, creating a homogenized space shrouded in neutrality.
In Reading Gradience, rehearsal IV, the three artists invite the audience to read along with them on stage. By creating a space within an already existing space, the poetic essay fills the room with the ephemeral echo of translations, languages, and embodied dialects.

Sanna J. Hirvonen is a North Karelian writer, performance maker, and performer. Her artistic upbringing consists of movement practices and choreography with lifelong commitments to writing, reading, and voice work. Their work is rooted in the vulnerability of encounter with the audience, the embodied and political entanglements between place, body, and language, as well as the mobilisation of the collective body through experimentation with performative formats.
Dana Andrei works towards the performative and political practices of embodiment and presence of a text, and moves across various positions on the spectrum of language and organizing, in both art and politics. She most often engages with collectives and collaborative configurations into works incorporating image, text, and sound works. Her artistic practice is articulated in dialogue and addresses subjects such as the dynamics of public discourse, pop culture, and power relations. She is a member of the ”Ecaterina Arbore” Cooperative for Research and Political Action.
