Urban dances tour in 10 cities around the world /
Le tour du monde des danses urbaines en dix villes
From South Africa to Jamaica, from the United States to Angola, Brazilian choreographer Ana Pi offers an urban dance tour of the world, through ten cities and ten different types of dances. Every street dance is about a city, its violence and injustice, but also its vibrant energy.
Nowadays, urban dances are spreading mainly through the internet, which makes their evolution popular throughout the world. Ana Pi created the Urban Dance World Tour in 2014. Since then, she has performed it over 400 times around the world for audiences of all ages.
Urban dances in South America, the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa are always linked to the diverse body of African dance, which migrated with slaves and deported immigrants from the mainland. These forms of urban dance were invented in the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, shaped by waves of deportation and immigration. In these dances, one can also see the complex legacy of this deeply unequal social order coming to the surface.
