Monocube is a Ukrainian dark ambient music artist, active since 2008, currently based in Berlin. Monocube explores the post-industrial music scene: dark ambient, drone, noise and experimental electronic music, using mainly analog instruments, including modular synthesizers.
In addition to conventional analogue synthesis techniques (FM, AM, filtering, enveloping and panning under voltage control), Monocube uses various types of wave shaping, distortion and feedback, oscillator-generated frequencies at the upper and lower limits of aural perception. Its music is finely tuned and highly detailed, yet visceral and raw.
In this short and intense concert, Monocube will perform live some variations of the soundtrack of the show BLOT – Body Line of Thought, created by Simona Deaconescu and Vanessa Goodman, a Romanian-Canadian choreographic duet. Accompanied by microscopic images of bacteria cultures grown by the two artists on their bodies, the musical event proposes an immersion in reflective sound universes. Marked by perceptual contrasts, the musical piece oscillates from dense formations of electric noise to recordings and drones of overwhelming intensity.
The concert is followed by a discussion with Monocube and Simona Deaconescu, a free dialogue about the art of making a multimedia project using analogue techniques at the height of the digital revolution. How is the contemporary world reflected through analogue instruments? The two artists will invite the audience to reflect on the relationship between time, sound, image and body.
